Jeon Julien, Librarian in St Vincent and the Grenadines

The Beginning: Stepping into the World of Libraries

After completing my degree, I was brimming with excitement and ready to immerse myself in the world of libraries. Since my final year internship in 2012 at the National Public Library, Archives and Documentation Services (NPLADS), I set my eyes on working at the National Archives and Documentation Centre. It was fate, when I received my appointment letter, assigning me to the Documentation Centre.

I was thrust into a supervisory position working alongside the late Cordel Matthews, Archivist, and Aubrey Gould, Asst. Government Printer. I honed my skills in cataloguing, reference services, and community outreach. But it wasn’t long before I discovered a love for research. I found immense joy in combing through records for hours, discovering different aspects of our Vincentian history, and assisting patrons especially those in the diaspora with tracing their family ancestry.

Promotion of Culture through Creativity: Clap for Fun Group Leader

Among my many roles, one of the most rewarding has been leading the Children Library Annual Programme “Clap for Fun” 8-10 group. Since joining the Clap for Fun Committee in 2013, I have helped to execute the programme’s aims to promote Vincentian culture while exposing children to art, exploration of the natural beauty of St. Vincent, and fostering a love for reading while having fun. Over time, it has grown into a beloved part of the library’s culture.

Marketing and Community Engagement: Head of the Marketing Committee

My role expanded even further with the increased use of social media. Since joining the marketing committee in 2016, I have helped to develop and implement innovative marketing strategies that have attracted more patrons to our 23 branch libraries across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One campaign that I am especially proud of is the Library Caravan launched in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the explosive eruption of our La Soufriere volcano. Library staff and friends of the library travelled throughout the mainland and the Grenadine Island of Bequia promoting library services, reading and sharing the joy of receiving a book. I worked closely with local schools, businesses, and organisations to ensure the libraries connected families and communities through reading.
