Overcoming Conservation & Preservation Challenges in Jamaica

The UWI Main Library recently held its Preservation and Conservation Awareness Symposium as part of the Mona Library Week.

Ms Joelle Salkey Faulder, an adjunct Lecturer in Museum Studies in the Departments of Library and Information Studies gave an enlightening “Addressing Challenging in Tangible Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management in Jamaica”

Ms Salkey Faulder gave an intriguing presentation on the many concerns and issues facing tangible cultural heritage objects and the professional discipline of preservation and conservation in Jamaica.

From natural hazards and disasters to inadequate and ineffective legal and policy frameworks, the care, preservation and conservation of objects and other tangible cultural materials are at risk.

Some possible solutions were offered including greater investment in resources and training and implementing legal ramifications for destructive practices..
