Launch of the New Department Logo

Central to the “Review, Renew and Revitalize” departmental strategy is the revisioning of our public image and perceptions.  With the retirement of the former departmental logo, effective 31 July 2024, a new symbol of identity was needed. A Departmental taskforce was commissioned to achieving this task.

With effect from 13 February 2025, the Department of Library and Information Studies (DLiS) has a new logo. This new logo was the result of the work of a Departmental Taskforce on branding, comprised of Ms Chantelle McGowan, Mrs. Peta-Gaye Richards and Mr Sherwood McCaskie. The aim of this taskforce is to revision the representation of the department in keeping with contemporary perspectives on Information.  The final design was created by Ms Chantelle McGowan, who describes the logo as follows:

“The new DLiS logo represents a blend of knowledge and innovation, with its emphasis on Information. The capitalized letters symbolize strength, structure, and academia, while the lowercase “i” stands for individuality and insight, and the centrality of Information as the source of such individuality and insight. The lightbulb with a brain inside the dot emphasizes creativity, intellectual growth, and the fusion of ideas—highlighting the mission to illuminate minds and inspire learning. It represents the Department’s renewed epistemological focus on the creation, dissemination, preservation and use of information, rather than the mere objects, expressions and repositories of information.”

To launch and celebrate this new identity, staff shirts were commissioned with the new logo.
